Sweden Names New Non-Resident Defence Attaché to PH

The Embassy of Sweden in Manila has announced the appointment of Lt. Col. Stefan Ungerth as Sweden’s new Non-Resident Defence Attaché to the Philippines, as Stockholm continues to deepen defence cooperation and strategic engagement with the country.

“I am proud and grateful to have been given this opportunity to serve as Defence Attaché to the Philippines and to contribute to development, peace, and security by fostering relations between countries in the region, and playing a part in developing the strategic cooperation between Sweden and the Philippines,” Ungerth said.

A career officer in the Swedish Air Force, Ungerth is a graduate of Chalmers University of Technology. His military career includes flying fighter aircraft at Wing 7, serving with the Operational Test and Evaluation Unit, leading the Air Force Combat Simulation Center, and working as a Staff Officer at Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters.

The position of Non-Resident Defence Attaché to the Philippines was established in June 2025 as part of Sweden’s broader efforts to strengthen defence cooperation and engagement across the Indo-Pacific, with the Philippines identified as a key long-term partner.

Ungerth succeeds Lt. Col. Anders Nikanorsson, Sweden’s first Non-Resident Defence Attaché to the Philippines, who has since retired.
