Japan confers Order of the Rising Sun to Former Defense Chief Lorenzana

Conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star was led by Ambassador Koshikawa

On June 30, 2023, Hon. MGEN (Ret.) Delfin N. Lorenzana, Chairman of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) and Former Secretary of National Defense, received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, in a conferment ceremony held at the Japanese Ambassador’s Residence.

Gracing the occasion were Secretary of National Defense Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr., National Security Adviser GEN (Ret.) Eduardo M. Año, Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity GEN (Ret.) Carlito G. Galvez, Jr., and former Executive Secretary Salvador C. Medialdea.

The award, conferred by Ambassador KOSHIKAWA Kazuhiko on behalf of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, was given in recognition of Hon. Lorenzana’s contributions to enhancing defense cooperation and exchanges between Japan and the Philippines.

In his congratulatory message, Ambassador Koshikawa lauded Hon. Lorenzana’s leadership as the Secretary of National Defense for six years. Ambassador Koshikawa expressed appreciation for Hon. Lorenzana’s determination in realizing deeper defense ties between Japan and the Philippines in a wide range of areas, including the activation of enhanced defense exchanges, expansion of Japan Self-Defense Forces’ (JSDF) participation in training opportunities, and implementation of capacity-building support in the field of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The outcomes of these efforts under Hon. Lorenzana’s leadership contributed to accelerating the defense cooperation between Japan and the Philippines.
