Meralco Gains Scrap Industry Support

Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has gained the support of the Scrap Collectors and Recyclers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (SCRAP) in its campaign against the theft of electricity distribution facilities and materials.

Led by its president John Hung, SCRAP expressed its intent to strengthen its screening practices and vigilance to help prevent stolen utility materials from entering the scrap market.

The industry group’s support is expected to bolster Meralco’s continuing efforts to curb the theft of electrical distribution facilities, which can disrupt electricity services and pose risks to public safety.

During a meeting, Meralco officials led by Senior Vice President and Head of Networks Froilan J. Savet, First Vice President and Head of Facilities, Safety and Security Management Jerry B. Lao, and Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga welcomed SCRAP’s initiative.

The two groups discussed Meralco’s ongoing anti-pilferage measures and the company’s continued engagement with industry stakeholders to address the theft and unauthorized sale of electrical distribution materials.

Moving forward, Meralco and SCRAP will work to encourage greater participation from the scrap industry in preventing the trade of stolen electrical materials, protecting critical electricity infrastructure, and promoting public safety and social responsibility.
