CebuPac reiterates baggage rules for musical instruments, oversized cargo

CebuPac has clarified its policy on transporting musical instruments after a social media post by members of the Manila Symphony Orchestra raised concerns over the handling of violins on a recent flight.

The airline said passengers carrying musical instruments that exceed standard cabin baggage dimensions should purchase the Musical Instrument allowance under its CEB Special Baggage service.

“We advise passengers carrying musical instruments that do not fit as hand-carry items to purchase the Musical Instrument allowance through CEB Special Baggage,” the airline said.

CebuPac explained that the add-on service may be purchased during the booking process through its mobile application. It also reiterated that instruments intended for check-in must be packed in hard-shell cases, as soft cases and gig bags are not accepted.

The clarification followed an online post by the production manager of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, who said several violins were initially not allowed as carry-on baggage despite musicians having previously traveled with the instruments onboard CebuPac and other airlines.

Images of orchestra members carrying their violins inside the cabin quickly circulated on social media, drawing attention from travelers and the music community.

In response, CebuPac said all affected passengers were ultimately able to board their flights. The airline noted that some violins complied with the cabin baggage size limit of 56 centimeters by 36 centimeters by 23 centimeters and were permitted as hand-carry items.

For instruments that exceeded the prescribed dimensions, the airline said passengers were advised to remove the violins from their cases, while the cases were checked in at no additional cost.

CebuPac said the incident underscores the importance of checking baggage requirements before traveling, particularly for musical instruments and other oversized items.
