Meralco upgrades North Port substation

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has upgraded its North Port Substation in Tondo, Manila, to strengthen the reliability and operational safety of its distribution network.

The project involved upgrading 10 power circuit breakers and 19 disconnect switches from 40 kiloamperes (kA) to 63 kA, along with improvements to control cables and related civil works.

The upgrades enable the existing 115-kilovolt (kV) substation to withstand higher fault current levels, helping improve system reliability and support the safe and efficient delivery of electricity.

Among the major customers benefiting from the project are Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center, Tondo Medical Center, LRT stations, Mapúa University, and Lyceum of the Philippines University.

Meralco said the investment forms part of its efforts to modernize and strengthen its distribution network as it supports the electricity requirements of more than eight million customers.

The company said continued investments in its distribution infrastructure are aimed at building a more resilient electric system capable of meeting growing demand.
