Japan turns over ₱4.5M school in Tarlac

The Embassy of Japan has formally turned over a new six-classroom school building to Maungib Elementary School in Pura, Tarlac, reinforcing Japan’s support for basic education through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) program.

The turnover ceremony was held on July 13 and attended by Japanese Embassy officials led by Second Secretary and GGP Officer MUKAIGAWA Yurie, First Secretary and Labor Attaché SUZUKI Yuki, Pura Mayor Atty. John Paul M. Balmores, local government officials, and representatives of Maungib Elementary School.

The project, officially titled “The Project for the Construction of School Building for Maungib Elementary School in Pura, Tarlac,” received a grant of US$78,267, equivalent to approximately ₱4.5 million, under Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) program.

Before the project, the school in Barangay Maungib faced severe infrastructure problems, including a shortage of classrooms, termite-infested structures, leaking roofs, cracked and uneven concrete floors, and inadequate sanitation facilities. These conditions raised safety concerns and affected the quality of learning for students.

The new one-story building features six classrooms, each equipped with its own comfort room, providing a safer and more conducive learning environment for approximately 100 pupils from Grades 1 to 6.

Following the turnover ceremony, students participated in the traditional Japanese Tanabata festival by writing their wishes on colorful paper strips and hanging them on bamboo branches, symbolizing hopes for continued friendship between Japan and the Philippines.

In her remarks, Mukaigawa said the new facility would give students and teachers a safer, more comfortable, and more effective learning environment while creating better opportunities for the children’s future.

The Embassy of Japan said the project reflects Japan’s continuing commitment to supporting basic education and community development, particularly in underserved communities across the Philippines.

Japan has been the Philippines’ largest provider of Official Development Assistance. Since launching the GGP program in 1989, Japan has funded 569 grassroots projects nationwide to help improve local infrastructure and services while strengthening the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
