BPI launches eco-friendly debit card
The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has launched a new eco-friendly Debit Mastercard made from 100 percent recycled, PVC-free plastic, reinforcing the bank’s push for more sustainable banking solutions as it continues to gain international recognition.
The announcement comes as BPI landed 10th place in TIME and Statista’s 2026 list of the 500 Best Companies in the Asia-Pacific, making it the highest-performing company from the Philippines on the prestigious ranking.
BPI said the new Debit Mastercard is free for clients opening an account through a BPI branch, as well as for existing clients whose cards are nearing expiry or due for renewal. Clients who wish to switch to the recycled, PVC-free card ahead of their renewal schedule may do so for a standard ₱200 replacement fee.
The bank is among the country’s leading debit card issuers, with over 8.2 million debit cardholders nationwide. The launch of the eco-friendly card marks another step in BPI’s efforts to promote responsible banking and sustainability.
“Reimagining the BPI Debit Mastercard to become an eco-friendly card is a testament to BPI’s commitment to its values of sustainability and innovation. At BPI, we want to connect more with our eco-conscious clients while also encouraging others to practice sustainable habits. By using sustainable materials for our card, we hope to make sustainable behavior the default option for everyone,” said Jenny Lacerna, Head of Mass Retail, BPI.
Clients can request the new card through the BPI mobile app or BPI online platform and select their preferred branch for pickup, with a ₱200 fee applying to digital card requests. Those replacing an existing card simply need to block their current one in the BPI app to begin the replacement process.
Cards will be available for pickup at any BPI branch within two to six banking days, depending on location, while clients may also visit branches for assistance.
Beyond sustainability, the new debit card features design improvements aimed at accessibility, including a curved notch at the bottom left corner that helps users identify and orient their card by touch, making it easier to distinguish from other cards.
With the new card, BPI Debit Mastercard holders retain the services they rely on, including secure payments online, in stores, and abroad; contactless transactions; global ATM access; and 24/7 account management through the BPI app.
“The BPI Debit Mastercard is still the same card that our clients rely on — stylish, secure, and now more sustainable,” added Lacerna.
Founded 174 years ago, BPI is the first bank in the Philippines and the oldest in Southeast Asia, operating as a universal bank licensed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to provide a wide range of financial services including deposits, lending, payments, asset management, investment banking, and capital markets.
Through innovations such as the recycled Debit Mastercard, the bank said it aims to continue promoting practical, inclusive, and environmentally responsible banking solutions for Filipinos.
