Virtual power plants take spotlight at Taiwan smart city summit
The 12th Smart City Summit & Expo (SCSE), set to take place from March 18 to 21, 2025, at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, will spotlight the future of sustainable energy with Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) as a key innovation, summit organizers said.
With Taiwan transitioning to a nuclear-free future, VPPs are emerging as a vital solution for ensuring energy stability, while promoting sustainability and resilience in smart city development.
VPPs integrate distributed energy resources such as solar, wind, and battery storage systems into a single, virtual network, enabling cities to efficiently manage their energy needs without relying on nuclear power.
The Virtual Power Plant Pavilion, one of the major highlights of the event, will include key members from the Taiwan Smart City Solutions Alliance (TSSA), including industry leaders like Chunghwa System Integration, Delta Electronics, and Seetel.
Chunghwa Telecom, one of the event’s key contributors, has invited international telecom partners including Japan’s NTT and Singapore’s Singtel to present smart city applications that integrate VPPs and other renewable energy technologies.
This collaboration will demonstrate how smart networks can be used to optimize energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, making smart cities more sustainable in the long term.

Taiwan’s commitment to energy transition is evident in its focus on VPPs, as they represent a pivotal shift in managing energy resources more intelligently. These systems are crucial in meeting the demand for cleaner, greener energy, especially as Taiwan phases out its nuclear power plants.
The development of VPPs is expected to be a game-changer in ensuring reliable energy access while helping cities meet their net-zero emissions targets.
The summit will also feature the “Taiwan Virtual Power Plant Development Trends and Business Opportunities Forum,” which will bring together experts from across the globe to discuss strategies for expanding VPP deployment, exploring new business opportunities, and overcoming challenges in integrating renewable energy into existing infrastructures.
In addition to VPPs, the summit will focus on other innovative smart technologies such as AI-powered smart governance, smart transportation solutions, and energy-efficient systems. The convergence of these technologies will help cities worldwide accelerate their digital and green transformations, supporting their journey towards a more sustainable future.
The SCSE also includes the “Smart City Global Co-Creation Pavilion,” a new initiative aimed at fostering collaboration between Taiwanese enterprises and international partners. This pavilion encourages the integration of smart city solutions that can be applied across global markets, including those in emerging economies, where smart energy solutions like VPPs are expected to play a key role.
As the summit progresses, Taiwan will highlight its achievements in energy efficiency, including the winners of the inaugural “Urban Energy Transition Award.” Pingtung County and Kaohsiung City, recognized for their success in energy transitions, will showcase their innovative approaches to renewable energy and resource recycling.
