Canadian gold mining giant expands in Masbate
Canadian gold mining company B2Gold Corporation is expanding its operations in the Philippines, solidifying the country’s status as a premier investment destination.
The announcement was made during a courtesy visit to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), where top executives of the company met with DTI Secretary Cristina A. Roque to discuss their plans.
According to a DTI news release, B2Gold’s delegation included Vice President Neil Reeder, Senior Vice President for Engineering and Project Evaluations Dennis Stansbury, and Australia-Asia Exploration Manager Tony Field, accompanied by Filminera Resources Corporation President Cris Acosta. They detailed their ongoing and future investments, particularly in their mining project in Aroroy, Masbate.
The visit highlighted the establishment of B2Gold Philippines Exploration Corporation earlier this year, led by Exploration Manager Danilo Tandoc. The company’s exploration office opening was officially announced during the Team Canada Trade Mission, which saw 200 Canadian companies visit the Philippines — the largest Canadian business delegation in 27 years.
“B2Gold’s decision to expand its operations here reflects the confidence that global investors have in the robust policies, strategic reforms, and highly skilled workforce championed under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.,” said Secretary Roque. “We warmly welcome this development as it highlights the Philippines’ commitment to building partnerships that promote sustainable economic growth and inclusive regional development.”
A model for sustainable mining
Since beginning operations in Aroroy in 2013, B2Gold has implemented numerous sustainable and responsible mining practices. Among its environmental initiatives are mangrove reforestation, ocean rehabilitation through reef restoration, nurseries for endangered plant species, and the planting of fruit-bearing trees.
The company’s commitment to community development is equally notable, with significant investments in skills and livelihood training programs for local residents. B2Gold directly and indirectly employs nearly 2,000 workers, contributing to Aroroy’s transformation from a fourth-class municipality to a first-class municipality.
The executives also emphasized the Philippines’ strategic importance to B2Gold’s global operations, citing the country’s logistical advantages, skilled workforce, and enabling environment for mining. These factors have helped the Masbate mine achieve six consecutive years of operation without workplace injuries or accidents.
Strong support from government
Philippine Ambassador to Canada Maria Andrelita Austria and Philippine Trade and Investment Center Toronto Trade Commissioner Mario C. Tani joined the meeting with Secretary Roque, reinforcing the Philippines’ commitment to fostering foreign investments.
Secretary Roque highlighted several government initiatives designed to attract international investors, including the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises (CREATE) Act, the Board of Investment’s (BOI) Green Lanes, and targeted campaigns led by agencies such as the Philippine Economic Zone Authority and Bases Conversion and Development Authority.
“We are steadfast in our efforts to create a business environment that is both competitive and inclusive, ensuring that investors like B2Gold can thrive while contributing to the growth of local communities,” Roque added.
B2Gold’s expansion not only reaffirms the Philippines’ status as a key investment hub in the region but also underscores the importance of partnerships that prioritize sustainability and shared progress.
