Isang sinaunang palasyo, talagang mayroong isang nakakakilabot na sikreto
Castles are wonderful structures. To repel possible invaders, they are built atop high hills or tough terrain and take years to plan and build. And, thanks to fairy tales and Game of Thrones, you could believe that a castle’s interiors are as beautiful as its outside. But the reality is that living in a castle includes situations that would be inappropriate for even the most gruesome films.
Castles had a bad odor. Most servants and other lower-class inhabitants were unable to clean themselves due to a general absence of flowing water and the tremendous difficulties in acquiring it. And the bathrooms they were using didn’t help matters.
The restrooms were not particularly opulent. You’d probably have to go on a wooden seat with a small hole in it if you needed to go. Your excrement would either end up in a massive poo pit or directly into a moat. Life wasn’t any better outside of the bathroom.
A castle usually houses more than 100 people, so you’ll never feel lonely. Because there was so much square footage to maintain, royalties required a large team to keep up with it.
The high-ranking officials were in charge of politics and land protection, and their crew was in charge of cleaning and cooking.
Stay away from medieval castles if you have musophobia. They were overrun with rats because warmth, food (of any type), and open water supplies are just a few of the many factors that entice rodents to enter. Castles are the ideal rat-infested setting.
The floors, like everything else in a castle, were filthy. Cats and dogs had free reign of the room, which they used as a large latrine. Servants threw fragrant herbs on the ground to mask the odor. It was a poopy, crunchy mess. It was difficult to get clean.
A portable wooden tub would be used if someone wanted to take a bath. People would be able to use the tub by moving it from one room to the next. Was there any sense of seclusion? No. Was it sanitary? No, as well. It was, however, available.
