Toshiba to pour billions into PH expansion
Toshiba Corporation is set to expand its production capacity in the Philippines through a multi-billion-peso investment over the next three years, generating around 3,000 jobs and strengthening the country’s position in global technology supply chains, the Department of Finance (DOF) said in a news release.
Investment czar and Finance Secretary Frederick D. Go met with Toshiba Corporation officials, led by Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Senior Executive Vice President (EVP) Koji Ikeya, to discuss the company’s expansion plans to increase its nearline hard disk drive (NL-HDD) production capacity in the Philippines.
NL-HDDs provide high-capacity storage for applications such as data centers, which are experiencing growing storage requirements amid the expansion of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital services, and other data-intensive technologies.
The planned investment builds on Toshiba’s more than three decades of manufacturing operations in the Philippines, which serves as a major production base for the company’s global HDD business. For the Philippines, it provides an opportunity to capture a larger share of the growing global demand for high-capacity data storage while strengthening the country’s capabilities in advanced electronics manufacturing.
“We see Toshiba’s planned expansion as an opportunity to strengthen our industrial base, build an electronics and tech industry ecosystem that creates quality jobs for Filipinos, and position the Philippines to capture opportunities in the growing global technology and data economy. Toshiba’s continued commitment to the Philippines is a testament to the success of reforms such as CREATE MORE in attracting long-term investments,” Secretary Frederick Go said.
Secretary Frederick Go and representatives from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) assured Toshiba of the government’s commitment to facilitating the investment and supporting an environment conducive to long-term manufacturing operations.
“The Philippines has been an important part of Toshiba’s manufacturing operations for more than three decades. We remain committed to growing our presence here, building on the skills and dedication of our Filipino employees, and working with the Philippine government to advance our next phase of investment,” Toshiba Corporation COO and Senior EVP Koji Ikeya said.
Toshiba marks 31 years in the Philippines since establishing Toshiba Information Equipment (Philippines), Inc. (TIP) at Laguna Technopark in 1995 and commencing operations in 1996. Today, the company operates two major manufacturing facilities in Laguna, with its second site located at Carmelray Industrial Park 1 in Calamba.
Its Philippine operations cover the manufacturing and assembly of hard disk drives, enterprise solid-state drives, and advanced helium-filled HDDs, as well as engineering and design services, rework, and printed circuit board assembly.
Toshiba’s latest investment reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to the country while creating opportunities to deepen local supply-chain linkages, develop Filipino talent, and expand higher-value manufacturing activities.
As the government continues to advance reforms that make the Philippines more open and competitive for investors, Toshiba’s continued expansion reflects investor confidence in the country as the destination of choice for advanced manufacturing and technology investments.
