PBBM backs Naga City’s transport safety project

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has pledged full government support for the Naga City Sidewalk and Active Transport Project, a flagship initiative aimed at making one of the city’s busiest roads safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, and commuters.

“’We’ll give all-out support to this.’ Ito ang naging sagot ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. matapos makita ang Naga City Sidewalk and Active Transport Project,” Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said during a Palace press briefing.

Castro said Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon noted that President Marcos immediately endorsed the project and that it could become a pioneering model for active transport infrastructure to be replicated in other urban areas nationwide.

“Ayon kay DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon, walang pag-aatubiling nagpahayag ng suporta ang Pangulo sa proyekto na maaaring maging pioneering project na gagamitin sa iba pang urban areas sa buong bansa,” the Palace Press Officer added.

Castro said the DPWH secretary committed to commencing the road upgrade activities within the month.

The Naga City Sidewalk and Active Transport Project seeks to improve mobility and road safety by providing wider, obstruction-free sidewalks, dedicated bicycle lanes, solar-powered streetlights, tactile pavements for the visually impaired, and accessible curb ramps for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Once completed, the project is expected to improve daily travel for thousands of pedestrians, cyclists, and commuters using M.T. Villanueva Avenue while serving as a blueprint for future active transport projects in cities across the country.
