Meet Mary Toft, the lady who defied biological and society boundaries by giving birth to rabbits.

In the early 1700s, Mary lived in poverty where she married textile worker Joshua Toft. Although the union did not bring her much social empowerment on her case.

Instead, she was forced to work double for her to kids to keep her family afloat.

FIRST MISCARRIAGE

Mary suffered from miscarriage, a tragedy that usually happens to poor women back in her time.

With the female reproductive system still a mystery to the society, Mary started testing its limits.

She started having random contractions, until it developed into much worse kind of pain that had brought her to the doctor.

And much to her family’s surprise, even the medical professional could not explain what he saw.

According to John Howard, the town’s obstetrician, Mary birthed “three legs of a cat of a tabby color, and one leg of a rabbit.”

Unfortunately, his description wasn’t done yet. “The guts were as a cat’s and in them were three pieces of the back-bone of an eel.” Later on, it was discovered that Mary gave birth to 9 rabbits, all dead!

Mary eventually became the subject of studies and examination of the doctors on her town, until some experts started to realize the whole sham.

According to some doctors, there’s no way Mary could produce such creatures for one, “there was no way they were formed in Mary’s body. One of the rabbits had grass in its stomach, proof it had once frolicked free.”

DISCOVERING THE TRICK

After being threatened to perform reproductive surgery if she does not tell the truth, Mary eventually gave in, saying she conceals the rabbit inside her for days, or even weeks, before making a scene into the crowd.

Mary really was in excruciating pain, and it’s easy to see why. “It’s astonishing she didn’t die of a bacterial infection,” historian Karen Harvey said.
